PETALING JAYA: Acting Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has agreed to take part in a debate with other Umno president candidates Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
The debate is to be screened live over Astro Awani’s Channel 501 at 9.30pm on June 29, a day before the elections.
Tengku Razaleigh and Khairy had earlier confirmed their attendance.
During a special interview with Awani tonight, Zahid said he would join in as long as it was a platform to share his ideas on strengthening the party.
He hopes the debate will act as a platform to share knowledge on Umno.
The Bagan Datuk MP said he will be with his people on the eve of Umno party polls. This will mean his comments will have to be aired from his constituency.
“If it is not to break down the party into three camps, then I agree to the debate.
“But my condition is I will be in Bagan Datuk because that night I need to be at my division with the people,” he said.
Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh, in an interview with Astro Awani, had challenged Zahid and Khairy to the debate last week.
The three are among five contenders contesting the Umno top post in the June 30 party elections. Two others were disqualified.
Earlier, Zahid had also agreed to declare his assets together with Khairy and Ku Li.
